The desert, on record

Photographs from the desert.

Daytime camp on a dry desert flat — timber A-frame structures and white fabric sculptures, vehicles and tents beyond, flat-topped mesas on the horizon under a clear sky Night crowd in front of a scaffold stage, lit magenta and orange, a green laser overhead and a large puppet with a single eye and red lips held up among the dancers A tall sculpture built from welded scrap metal and overlapping discs, shaped like a long-necked creature, breathing a jet of flame into the night sky A stage canopy lit purple with a Jenk Star sign above it, two performers in orange boiler suits and monitor-screen helmets dancing on the platform beside a green shade sail A person in a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses working a blowtorch at a bench under a canopy at night, the flame burning white against the dark
